Privacy Policy

1. Overview
LectureMate ("we", "our", or "the app") is a note-taking and study app for high school, college and university students, available at lecturemate.app. This policy explains what information we handle, where it is stored, who processes it, and the choices you have.
The short version: your notes, recordings and study progress are stored on your own device, not on our servers. We keep only what we need to run your account and subscription. When you use a Pro AI feature, the content you choose is sent to our AI provider to generate the result. We do not sell your data or show ads in the app. On our homepage only, and only if you allow it, we use the Meta Pixel to measure our advertising (section 8).
2. Your account
When you create an account we store, on our servers: your name, email address and password (stored only in hashed form by our authentication provider), the answers you give during onboarding (your role, subjects, study goal, study style and weekly study hours), your plan (Free or Pro), when your account was created, and — if you reached our homepage through one of our ads or campaign links — which campaign and ad it was (the link's campaign tags), so we can see which ads bring people who sign up. That stays in our own database and is not shared with advertisers.
Our servers are operated by Supabase, Inc. and located in the United States. We use this information to sign you in, recognise your plan on any device, and personalise the app.
3. Study data stored on your device
Your notes, folders, flashcards, quizzes and quiz results, study progress, assignments, study groups and lecture recordings are stored in your browser’s storage (or your device’s app storage) on the device you use. We do not upload them to our servers, and they are not synchronised between your devices.
Because this data lives only on your device, clearing your browser data, uninstalling the app or losing the device can erase it. Use Settings → Data → Download backup to keep a copy, and Restore from backup to move it to another device. Backup files are created on and saved to your own device; we never receive them.
4. AI features (Pro)
When you use an AI feature — summaries, flashcards or quizzes generated from a note, “Ask your notes”, text recognition for a scanned page, or a lecture transcript — the content needed for that request (note text, relevant note excerpts, the scanned image, or the audio recording) is sent through our server to our AI provider, Groq, Inc., which processes it to return the result.
Our server does not store the content of these requests. For each request we record your account ID and the time, so we can enforce plan access and a daily usage limit. We do not use your content to train AI models. Groq processes requests under its own terms and privacy policy (groq.com/privacy-policy).
AI features only run when you choose to use them. Free-plan features (basic summaries, flashcards and quizzes) are generated on your device and send nothing.
5. Microphone and camera
LectureMate asks for microphone access only when you choose to record a lecture, and camera or photo access only when you choose to scan a page. Recordings and photos are stored on your device. They are sent to our AI provider only if you choose to transcribe a recording or recognise text in a scan (see section 4).
These permissions are optional and can be changed at any time in your browser or device settings. If you decline, the rest of the app keeps working.
6. Payments and subscriptions
Pro subscriptions are processed by Stripe, Inc. You enter your payment details on Stripe’s secure checkout; we never see or store your card number. Stripe handles payment and billing information under its own privacy policy (stripe.com/privacy).
We store a record of your subscription on our servers: your Stripe customer ID, plan, status, renewal or end date, and whether it is set to cancel. Stripe’s customer portal lets you update your card or cancel at any time.
7. Service providers
We rely on these companies to run LectureMate. Each processes information only to provide its service to us:
• Cloudflare, Inc. — hosts and delivers the website and app, and protects it from abuse. Like any website host, it processes your IP address and basic request details. • Supabase, Inc. — user accounts, sign-in, subscription records and our server functions (United States). • Stripe, Inc. — payments and subscription billing. • Groq, Inc. — AI processing for Pro features (section 4). • Meta Platforms, Inc. — measures our ads on Facebook and Instagram, only on our homepage and only if you allow it (section 8). • Our email delivery provider — sends account emails such as password resets.
We do not sell or rent your personal information. Apart from the optional Meta Pixel on our homepage (section 8), we do not share information with advertisers, and nothing you do inside the app is shared with them.
8. Cookies, storage and analytics
LectureMate stores your sign-in session and app data in your browser’s local storage so you stay signed in and your notes are available offline. If you reach our homepage through one of our ads or campaign links, it also saves that link's campaign tags in your browser's local storage so they can be added to your account when you sign up; nothing is sent to advertisers. The app itself (everything under lecturemate.app/webapp) uses no advertising cookies, third-party analytics tools or cross-site tracking. Our providers may keep standard technical logs (such as IP addresses and request times) for security and reliability.
Our homepage (lecturemate.app) can use the Meta Pixel, a tool from Meta Platforms, Inc., to measure how well our ads on Facebook and Instagram work. It runs only after you choose “Allow” in the cookie banner. When it runs, it sets cookies and sends Meta information about your visit: the page address, your IP address, browser and device details, and Meta’s cookie identifiers. If you are logged in to Facebook or Instagram, Meta may link the visit to your account and use it to measure and personalise ads, under its own privacy policy (facebook.com/privacy/policy). The pixel does not receive your account details, notes, recordings or anything else from inside the app.
The pixel is off by default. You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of our homepage. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a “no” and do not load the pixel. You can also control ad settings in your Facebook or Instagram account.
9. How long we keep information
We keep your account and subscription records for as long as your account exists. AI usage records (account ID and time) are kept only as long as needed to enforce usage limits and keep the service secure. Payment records held by Stripe are retained as required by law.
Study data on your device stays there until you delete it (Settings → Data → Clear all data), clear your browser data, or remove the app.
10. Your choices and rights
Access and copy: Settings → Data → Download backup gives you a copy of your study data. To receive a copy of the account information we hold, email us.
Correct: you can update your name in Settings → Edit profile. To change the email address you sign in with, email us.
Delete: Settings → Data → Clear all data erases study data from your device. To delete your account and the information on our servers, email [email protected] from your account’s email address; we will delete it within 30 days and confirm when done. Cancel any active subscription first in Settings → Manage subscription.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law. Contact us and we will help.
11. Children and students
LectureMate is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; if you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it. If you are under 18, please use LectureMate with a parent’s or guardian’s permission, and have them handle any purchase. If you are under 18, we ask that you choose “Decline” in our homepage cookie banner.
12. Security
Information is sent over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Account data is protected by access rules that let each user read only their own records, and our AI provider key is kept on our server, never in the app. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with an updated date. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will also notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
