The Essay: Thesis & Structure
How to build an essay from a strong thesis through organized, unified paragraphs.
Crafting a Thesis Statement
- A thesis statement makes a specific, arguable claim that directly answers the essay prompt and previews the essay's main points.
- A weak thesis is a vague fact or a simple summary; a strong thesis takes a position that could reasonably be argued against.
Which is the stronger thesis: "The story has a sad ending" or "The story's sad ending reveals that unchecked ambition ultimately destroys relationships"?
Solution. The second — it makes a specific, arguable claim about meaning, rather than simply stating an obvious fact.
Essay Organization
- An introduction hooks the reader, provides context, and ends with the thesis; body paragraphs each develop one main point with evidence; a conclusion restates the thesis in new words and reflects on its significance.
Where should the thesis statement usually appear in an essay?
Solution. Typically at the end of the introduction paragraph, after the hook and context, so it sets up what the body paragraphs will prove.
Topic Sentences & Paragraph Unity
- A topic sentence states a paragraph's main point and connects back to the thesis; every other sentence in that paragraph should support it.
- Paragraph unity means avoiding unrelated ideas that don't support the paragraph's main point.
A body paragraph about a character's courage suddenly includes two sentences about an unrelated character's cowardice. What problem does this cause?
Solution. It breaks paragraph unity — the unrelated sentences distract from and don't support the paragraph's main point about courage.
Transitions & Coherence
- Transitions (e.g. "however," "in addition," "as a result") show the logical relationship between ideas and help an essay flow smoothly.
- Coherence means ideas connect logically from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph, guiding the reader clearly through the argument.
Two sentences in an essay contrast a character's stated beliefs with their actions. Which transition word would best connect them?
Solution. "However" — it signals a contrast between the two ideas.
